Ellen DeGeneres

Quick Quiz: Which individual on this page is reportedly dating Ellen DeGeneres? (hint: eliminate all men...and women over forty...and non-blondes)

Sharon Stizzzone

Speaking of Sharon Stone, did anyone hear how she got several people to donate a total of $1 million in a span of five minutes to buy mosquito nets for Tanzanians to stop malaria? All of this happened at a UN conference. Yes...she's cracked, but this is still amazing.

My Thoughts..... in run-on sentances

Of the two most famous femme fatale movies of the early 90's, Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction (was that late 80's?), in both of which, by the way, Michael Douglas is lucky enough to have the starring role, I think Basic Instinct takes the cake. The sex scene with his crazy psychologist girlfriend (who ends up being the killer), when he kinda has sex with her even after she kinda says "no" (did someone say rape?)... is really hot (granted, it's slightly disturbing, but still hot). And then of course there's Sharon with her leg crossing and uncrossing... that famous beaver-revealing moment which forever changed cinema as we know it and created bountiful material for Saturday Night Live. What does Fatal Attraction have to offer next to that? Glen Glose? C'mon. Besides, in Basic Instict no bunny has to die and we never have to see Sharon covered in blood or all nasty and drowning in a steamy bathroom.

dead people

six million or so are piled up under the city.
you can touch their skulls, femurs and scapulas if you want to...
i haven't done it myself, but i often think about it.
when i'm with them alone, sometimes i think i can hear them
thinking, hear their memories,
hear them telling me their names.
no one knows who they are; they're just dead, nameless dug-up, stacked-up dead.

Johnny

So, Johnny's gone. Some great stories: his dislike of Leno; his love of Letterman; the time the little animal pissed on his head; and my personal favorite, his wish that his headstone would read, "I'll be right back."

Leaders are: Reinhardt (31), Bukstein (25), and Lhotka (25). No need to worry about Bukstein, as see has a history of going out quick early, then fading at the end. I don't know what that means, exactly.

Great site, though. Posts coming fast and furious. Or, in the parlance of Ben, furius.

Embarrass

Don't nobody embarrass themselves with false confidence and self-congratulatory back-patting. The year is long.

Wanted: Electronic Graphics Help

Does anyone know anyone who is very knowledgable/talented with electronic graphic arts? I'm working on a project for a new logo/mascot for Henry Sibley. I have rudimentary drawings and artwork and conceptual ideas, but I need someone to help put the refined work on paper, so-to-speak.

Anyone? Anyone?

Bad pick

Does anyone find it slightly strange or creepy that Ben keeps commenting on his own posts and complimenting himself using different names?

This story doesn't bode well for my wild card pick. I need this guy to attack with renewed vigor, not acquiesce to the peace makers...

Lost Dog

Anyone lost a beagle? Check out this site...

I posted this at 4:20.

Dear Monterrey Herald...

An open letter to Jon Segal: Segal, I would be happy to be your "sports-related" fact-checker for your blog, if you wish. I'll do it for free. Really. First, it's the acronym BALCO, now it's that Terrell Owens signed the ball and handed it to his financial advisor, not his agent. C'mon now, brother!

Condolences to White Rabbit

Seems that someone should have found Spencer Dryden. He was worth lots of points, relatively speaking. I never liked Jefferson Airplane, but Jefferson Hovercraft was one of my favorite bands of the early-mid eighties.

Everyone stay warm, you could catch your death of cold out there...

The Death of Common Sense

Don King, a favorite pick for Dead Pool 2008 is suing ESPN for $2.5 bn for saying shit that has all been said before. Like he killed people, and he's a snakeoil salesman, and a huckster.

And this poor guy's whole family died when he stepped out to get ice cream in the middle of a mudslide. California sounds like a tragically devastated place. Or a devastatingly tragic place. I wonder how much aid money the president will send.

afternoon snack

Can I add the pilliated woodpecker to my list?
I'll scrap Pinochet.

Today's Lesson Plan

Just so you all have an idea of what I get to do on a daily basis, here's what we're talking about today in class: Rafael's "School of Athens", a fresco commissioned by Pope Julius II and located at the Vatican. Be sure to note the extensive use of linear perspective. Think about how that compares to Medieval European art or art from other parts of the world, especially Asia. Note how Rafael presents certain figures as having contemporary (to Raphael) likenesses. For instance, Plato is Leonardo da Vinci. Heraclitus is Michelangelo. Euclid is Bramante. Hypathia is Francesco Rovere (why is Francesco presented as a female?). Can you find Socrates and his "pug" nose? What great Macedonian leader is he talking to? Also note that Raphael has hidden himself among these ancient heroes in his own painting (located mid-level of right edge). Enjoy.

Somewhere else...

I used to live on West Wash. Before that I used to live on West Doty. And after that, I lived on Butler. But those days are over. Now I live on Excellent Boulevard across from Jiffy Lube. I sit and stare out the window and think about all that lubrication. So slippery.

If this year is anything like last year, we might not have any relevant business until June.

So, if no one posts here, does it cease to be a blog?

I have to admit, I had high hopes for this Dead Pool blog. I was hoping that this would be a running dialogue between friends...a sort of running e-mail strand without the hassles of e-mail. Sort of like this blog. But it seems like A) there aren't enough people signed-on, or B) people are into their individual blogs (like this one, or this one, or this one) and just don't want to blog here as well.

I'm confused.

No Hammer! Don't Hurt 'Em!

Vince Neil weds. MC Hammer officiates. Story at 11.

Window Shopping

Has anyone else randomly checked-out some of the various blogs on this site? It kind of reminds me of window shopping on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris: many strange sensory experiences, many of which of foreign and thereby hard to understand. Perhaps the most interesting I've found so far is one by an out of work actress in NYC. You can find this one by hitting next five or six times after viewing Sal's blog...

And just so I'm on topic: Death.

Monday, January 10, 2005

Oh...

If you mock and ridicule my cinematic preferences, that post will have a lot more to do with death than it does now, m'boy! Do you see what I'm doing right now? Do you? I'm faking pulling off my pants to fake moon you! That's what I'm doing right now!

The Subject

KQRS picked their 2005 Dead Pool picks this morning.

Hey Rob, does your post about Before Sunrise have anything to do with the Dead Pool? I fail to see the connection.

Dead Pool Addition?

There was a rumour over the weekend that the Dead Pool would be adding a last-minute member (TJ), but he has chosen not to participate. His company's website is pretty damn sweet, though...

Before Sunrise Sunsets

So The Gal and I decided that we both wanted to see Before Sunset, the 2004 Ethan Hawke-Julie Delpy flick, after reading this week's City Pages. Funny thing is, The Gal didn't know that it was a sequel. So we rented Before Sunrise last night to prime her for the new film. I was surprised at how well Before Sunrise aged. I thought that it would reek of 1995/grunge/flannel/greasy hair/I'm-taking-myself-way-too-seriously, but it didn't. A lot of the themes/topics are still relevent today. Funny.

I'm excited to see Before Sunset. (If you've seen it, feel free to review it, but please don't ruin the ending)

For Real?

The things you learn from friends on blogs...
(a more sophisticated, healthier, high-tech version of friends on drugs?)

A) Holy Crap, is that Red Sox player's last name real or were you just fucking with us RFD?

B) Brad and Jen are through? I don't believe in love anymore.
Jen, if you're out there.... I'm here. She's mine Segal!

Moon over Green Bay

Man...this blog is taking off like wildfire! But hey, look! It's a full Moss!

Death in Green Bay

Dead: Packers' Season

Dead: Lambeau Mystique

Dying: Brett Fav-reh's Career

Alive: The Super Bowl dreams of a house full of Vikings fans in the 3200 block of Holmes Ave S. on Sunday (including this gal)

Wild Card

Did anyone pick me?
I'm about to jump out my office window.
It was nice knowing you guys.

Another Kennedy Dies

Rosemary Kennedy, the 86 year-old mentally handicapped sister of JFK and RFK passed away tonight at her institution in Wisconsin. Rosemary was also subject to a family-supported frontal lobotomy in 1941 when she was all of 23.

Also: Did anyone hear the one about the Red Sox player who wouldn't give the team the ball that made the last out of this year's World Series? None other than our own Doug Mientikiewicziechetich.

Death in South Africa

Yesterday, the son of former South African President Nelson Mandela died from AIDS. As the elder Mandela was publicly addressing the death of his son, 54 year-old Mukgatho, current South African President Thabo Mbeki grabbed the microphone, knocking Mandela to the ground, and insisted that AIDS doesn't exist*.

*Sadly, Mbeki has actually claimed this to international health organizations trying to curb the epidemic in his nation.

An anniversary

Tony, are you and Chie doing anything special tonight to commemorate the 16th anniversary of Hirohito's death?

Nobody I've ever heard of died in the last couple of days. Except Will Eisner who invented the modern graphic novel when he created "The Spirit," which as you all know is considered the Citizen Kane of comic books. Fun fact: he also created "A Contract with God" about a Jewish immigrant who becomes a slumlord in the Bronx. Happy hunting Jewish comicbook fans!

By the way, the idea is that we will all be able to post, not leave anonymous comments like Dr. Deadly. Though its nice to know that someone from the 10 of you actually gave a shit for 2 seconds today. Thanks Dr. Deadly for validating the existence of this blog as anything other than an exercise in self-satisfaction.

Yeah! Its Friday!

Missed opportunities

It is still the first week of January and we have two deaths that no one had and no one saw coming. This will be an open forum for us to opine on the dead pool, as we proceed through 2005.

Rep. Robert Matsui died suddenly and unexpectedly from pneumonia due to a rare bone marrow disease that no amount of internet research could have diagnosed.

Locally, we lost an icon of kitschy bake sales with the passing of H. David Dahlquist, the inventor of the bundt pan. What can I say about H. D. Dahlquist that hasn't already been said? Thanks to his genius, the annual Hadassah bake-off has been an occassion for unbridled celebration and uniform pieces of cake since the 50's. We'll miss ya H. David!
